VINA is the trusted advocate for innovative vine propagators. It provides value to its members and the wider grape production community through provision of high quality vines, relevant and up to date information and best practice in production and biosecurity.
History and Purpose
The Vine Industry Nursery Association (VINA) was established in 1997 in response to growing concern about the quality, consistency, and traceability of grapevine planting material during a period of rapid expansion in Australian viticulture. Nursery leaders recognised that without shared standards, clear accountability, and collective leadership, vine health and long-term vineyard performance were at risk.
Formed by professional vine nurseries committed to improvement and collaboration, VINA was created to provide a clear, authoritative voice for the grapevine supply sector and to strengthen its contribution to the broader industry. From the outset, the association sought to improve communication across the supply chain, promote best practice in vine propagation, and build confidence in planting material through transparency and shared responsibility.
As the industry evolved, VINA grew into the national peak body for professional vine nurseries, leading the development and oversight of the Vine Industry Nursery Accreditation Scheme (VINAS). Through accreditation, independent auditing, and continuous improvement, VINA has helped embed biosecurity, traceability, and consistent standards into grapevine production across Australia.
Today, VINA’s purpose remains focused on the long term: protecting vine health, strengthening industry confidence, and supporting a resilient and sustainable future for Australian vineyards. By setting nationally recognised standards and providing trusted oversight, VINA ensures the foundations of viticulture are built on quality, integrity, and science-based decision-making — giving growers confidence at planting and the industry confidence in what follows.

Through national leadership and accreditation, VINA brings together growers, nurseries, researchers and regulators to protect vine health, elevate standards, and safeguard biosecurity across the grapevine supply chain. By setting clear expectations and encouraging best practice, we help ensure that planting material is not only fit for purpose today, but capable of supporting productive vineyards, regional prosperity, and industry integrity for decades to come.
As the industry evolves, so do the challenges — from emerging pests and diseases to changing climates and market expectations. VINA exists to provide stability, assurance and long-term vision, ensuring Australia’s vineyards are built on sound science, shared responsibility and trusted systems. In doing so, we’re not just accrediting nurseries — we’re helping to shape a future where confidence at planting translates into sustainability, performance and growth across the entire viticultural landscape.
VINA Committee
VINA has been governed by a volunteer committee since its inception. Membership has remained open to all interested vine nursery operators, as well as representatives of grape-growing and winemaking organisations and managers of approved propagation material. Over time, associate-membership expanded to include a broad cross-section of the nursery and vine improvement sector nationwide. VINA’s current position is that a minimum membership requirement is to be an accredited nursery. A true VINA Member needs to be audited, any other form or corporate or industry partner is an associate-member only. This distinction has been established in order to continue to build trust and protect the VINA Accredited brand.

Stakeholders
VINA works with a diverse and interconnected network of stakeholders across the grapevine supply sector. These include vine propagators and the organisations that represent them, growers and end users, and cutting suppliers who form an essential part of the production chain. VINA also engages closely with regulatory and government bodies, including agricultural departments, biosecurity authorities and industry agencies such as Wine Australia, to support strong governance and vine health outcomes. Professional service providers such as consultants, auditors and diagnostic laboratories contribute technical expertise and assurance, while breeders and research organisations, including CSIRO, support innovation and the development of improved planting material. In addition, VINA collaborates with related industry associations and funding bodies to strengthen national connections, align industry priorities and deliver value across the broader viticultural sector.
